Alaena's Slow Living Selection #Week 7

 Monday, April 27

Alaena’s feathers: Virginie Mouzat , “And before me, freedom” .

Charlotte Perriand is one of the greatest figures in 20th-century architecture. A free, committed, and avant-garde woman, she helped invent our modernity. This book is her imaginary journal.

Charlotte Perriand was born in 1903 to a tailor father and a couture seamstress mother. From them, she inherited a taste for "fine work."  A graduate of the Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs in 1925, she became known at the age of 24 with her "Bar sous le toit", created for her apartment-studio on Place Saint-Sulpice, which remains as modern as ever in 2020. As a young girl, she had the audacity to walk through the door of Le Corbusier's design office to become his partner in the studio of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. In the mid-1920s, when the trend was still towards Art Deco, she already stood out for her simplicity, her choice of beautiful materials and her fascination with the industrial world. She revolutionized interior design, yet Le Corbusier is still credited with rooms designed by this resolutely modern architect.

A mountaineer, Charlotte Perriand also designed a magnificent refuge for Mont Joly in Haute-Savoie. Her freedom would take her from the USSR to Japan. There, Asian purism joined her research at 35 rue de Sèvres and even before. Form stemmed from functionality, emptiness, the least preferable to excess, but beyond that, she did not forget the relationship with humanity and its sensitivity. In the absence of steel dedicated to the war effort, she discovered straw, wood, and 150 types of bamboo: vegetable steel. Passionate about craftsmanship, she learned more from renowned artisans than in universities.

Finally, Indochina, the war, abstract artists, it is the whole of the 20th century that we rediscover through this modern-day adventurer who contributed to putting modern advances at the service of the greatest number.
