Pregnancy: how to take care of your body?

How does the skin react to pregnancy?

Dr. Sylvie Peres : Skin condition is influenced by hormonal and immunological changes associated with pregnancy. This includes stretch marks, hyperpigmentation, changes in hair and blood vessels, and, of course, skin hydration.

In general

The increase in estrogen is antagonistic to androgens and induces a decrease in sebum secretion and a thinning of the skin barrier. Skin lipids are significantly altered, resulting in drier skin.

On the other hand, immunity is reduced to tolerate the baby, which, with its different DNA, constitutes a "foreign body." The skin therefore becomes sensitive to inflammation, which explains the frequency of cutaneous pruritus (itchy skin).

Pre-existing conditions, such as psoriasis, eczema, or acne, may improve or worsen without explanation. Add to this a liver that's tired and amplifies the itching.

Generally speaking, you will need to be particularly vigilant and increase the hydration of the skin on your face and body , except in cases of acne.

Stretch marks

They are a rupture of the elastic dermal tissue, a consequence of skin distension. They most often appear in the third trimester and in women under 30. At first, they are red or purple, then pale and become pearly.

To limit the risk of stretch marks, limit weight gain to the recommended 1 kg per month. No product is authoritative, however, from the first month of pregnancy, a daily palpate-roll massage , stretching the skin from the back and thighs towards the navel, has proven effective.

After pregnancy, stretch marks can be treated with topical retinoids and then with radio frequency or CO2 laser.

Vascularization

Leg swelling and varicose veins must be prevented early. Nature is a foresighted person, and blood volume increases early in pregnancy, and varicose veins, rosacea, or spider veins can occur very early. Most often, everything returns to normal six months after delivery.

As a preventative measure, wear support stockings that you will keep on for some time after giving birth to avoid discomfort due to the drop in blood pressure when standing.

Is the Alaena range suitable during pregnancy?

Our entire range is certified organic by the Cosmos Organique label. This guarantees the absence of controversial ingredients, such as endocrine disruptors, and essential oils—with the exception of the repair cream.

What ritual do you recommend during pregnancy?

Dr. Sylvie Peres: In the shower, use the cold-process mango and avocado soap without essential oils. It is also suitable for washing babies.
To prevent the appearance of stretch marks, moisturize your skin well morning and evening. Depending on your preferences, you can choose the nourishing rose petal oil or the summer garden radiance balm . Massage in a rolling motion, stretching the skin from the back and thighs, to prepare it for stretching.

Take care of yourself, be gentle, don't overwork, get plenty of rest to allow your child to develop peacefully, and stock up on energy for the upcoming marathon of sleepless nights.

Take the opportunity to hunt down the chemicals that invade our daily lives, in particular endocrine disruptors, industrial hygiene products, synthetic perfume (personal or room fragrance), varnish, paint, industrial furniture and glued carpets, pesticides, etc. Take time to prepare a healthy environment for your baby.

Food

More than ever, I recommend a healthy, balanced, organic diet .

It will be varied according to the seasons for a natural detoxification of the liver. Avoid foods with a high glycemic index and ensure an optimal intake of vegetable and animal protein. Balance your lipids, especially omega 3, important for the skin and brain development. Consume plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, without forgetting legumes. Buy them dry and soak them for 24 hours; this is very important for your microbiota and that of the child.

Optimize your intake of iron, folate, mineral salts, and B vitamins. Supplementation is especially necessary for B6, which prevents spina bifida. A healthy bowel is essential for these nutrients to be absorbed.

Drink quality water – filtered or mineral – not contained in plastic.

I insist on fresh foods with an organic label that protects against pesticide residue. They will brighten your complexion, but above all, they prepare you, your child, and the adult they will become healthy.

What postpartum ritual do you recommend?

I recommend a minimalist ritual, because time is short. Cleanse your face and body with the mango & avocado soap . Continue moisturizing until the skin returns to its previous state, with the sensitive skin moisturizer morning and evening. For the body, massage the skin with the nourishing rose petal oil or the summer garden radiance balm . It is also a moment to reconnect with your body, to reclaim it.
