Alaena's Feathers: Fabienne Verdier, her autobiographical book "Passenger of Silence"

She was 22 years old when she left for communist China in 1983 to attend the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in Chongqing, the most remote art school in China. She wanted to learn Chinese calligraphy. To do so, she would risk her life. She had no idea that the great masters, the custodians of a thousand-year-old teaching, were being persecuted by the Cultural Revolution and that young Chinese people had to learn to paint like Matisse or Picasso.

In this profound and gripping tale, set against the backdrop of local poverty and the inquisitorial system of the communist administration, she tells us of the long journey (about ten years) to acquire the spirit of the masters and earn the right to paint in her own way, to share with us their feeling of union with the universe and its beauty.

Beautiful Skin Recipe: Buckwheat Porridge with Leeks - Serves 4

  • 1 leek

  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil

  • 250g hulled buckwheat

  • 750 ml vegetable broth

  • 200 ml of soy cream

  • 2 tablespoons of cashew nut puree

  • 2 tablespoons of malted yeast

  • Pepper

Slice the leek and sauté it in olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Season with pepper. Add the buckwheat and stock. Cook for 20 minutes. Add the cream, cashew puree, and malted yeast, and cook for another 10 minutes.

The benefits of buckwheat for the skin: Known as black wheat, it was driven out of France by conventional wheat, yet it is a powerful antioxidant. It contains phenolic compounds (caffeic acid, ferulic acid, hydrobenzoic acid, and coumaric acid) two to twelve times more than wheat, oats, barley, and rye. It also contains flavonoids, including rutin, which has a relaxing effect on muscles and reduces the fragility of blood vessels.
